Abstract
A family centered maternity care is the care and supervision given to an expectant mother and family throughout pregnancy, labor and puerperium. It is based on a thoughtful understanding of the woman as a unique individual with peculiar needs which must be met within the context of the client family. The care is extended to the client’s family as well as the community in which she lives. Family centered maternity care gives each family member the education and support the family needs to welcome the new baby. This comprehensive care rendered by the student midwife essentially involves data collection, assessment, nursing process to identify problems throughout the pregnancy, planning, implementation and evaluation of the data that would help solve the individual’s problems. It helps to utilize all the skills and knowledge acquired from the various subjects taught in school to give care to peculiar needs of the pregnant woman and her family. In addition, the new trends in midwifery and the safe motherhood protocol are adopted. The care and supervision from the student midwife help the woman to go through pregnancy without any complication to her and her baby. It is also aimed at allaying fear or anxiety of the pregnant woman during her pregnancy, labor and puerperium and preparing members of the client’s family to adapt and receive the baby to be born. The care study also serves as a partial fulfillment of an academic requirement of the nursing and midwifery council of Ghana to license a student midwife to practice upon completion of another course
