Description
HIV/AIDS is a threat to life; thus, individuals need to know their HIV status through testing. This is necessary because such a test helps to reduce transmission and involvement in risky sexual behaviors. The purpose of the study was to assess the attitude of trainee nurses and midwives towards voluntary counselling and testing on HIV/AIDS. A pertinent literature was reviewed done. A quantitative design was used to elicit responses from study participants. A convenience sampling technique was used to select participants for the study. A total of 50 participants was used for the study. Data was collected through the use of structured and semi structured questionnaires consisting of both closed ended and open-ended questions. Data was entered and analyzed using Microsoft excel and results were presented in the form of frequencies and percentages. Throughout the study, respect for persons, beneficence and justice
as ethics principles were maintained. The study revealed that, majority of respondents believed that stigmatization and discrimination and doubt about confidentiality and fear of positive results are the leading factors affecting VCT utilization. In addition, respondents expressed positive attitude towards the VCT service since most indicated it is essential in the prevention of HIV. The study recommended that public education campaign by health-care professionals on VCT on television, radio and the internet should be maintained. Such sustained programmes are likely to clear some of the social and psychological barriers and perceptions about the usefulness of VCT
