    A family centered maternity care is the care and supervision given to the expectant mother and family throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium. It is based on a thoughtful understanding of the woman as a unique individual with peculiar needs which must be met within the context of the client’s family. The care is extended to the members of the client’s family as well as the community in which she lives. Family centered maternity care gives each family member the education and support the family needs to welcome the new baby. It helps to utilize all the skills and knowledge acquired from the various subjects taught in school to give care to meet the peculiar needs of the pregnant woman and her family. The care study also serves as a partial fulfilment of an academic requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana to license a student midwife to practice upon completion other course.

    The practice of midwifery in the past focused mainly on the client in an effort to meet the client’s needs. However, all the needs of client could not be met because they lacked family support. Again, Midwifery has undergone a lot of changes globally and nationally. These changes have brought the introduction of client and family centered maternity care concept. The concept of family centered maternity care is a systematic way by which a comprehensive maternity and nursing care is given to a pregnant woman and her family throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium by the use of the nursing care process. The confidentiality of the client is ensured and client feels at ease to provide vivid history and discussions on confidential matters. This system gives the student midwife the opportunity to use all the knowledge and skills acquired during her training to give quality maternity care to the pregnant women and her family throughout the period of pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The study also enables the student midwife to identify and help clients solve their health problems. To achieve this, the student identifies the health problems, assess the client, set objectives, provide the necessary interventions, and evaluate the care to know if goals have been fully met at the end of the care. The care study forms part of the academic exercise from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana which serves as a partial fulfillment towards the award of a registered midwifery certificate.

    Client and Family centered maternity care study is a systematic, comprehensive and holistic approach used in rendering obstetric care to the expectant mother and her family as a whole throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The care involves data collection, nursing diagnosis, assessment, identification of problems, planning; implementation and evaluation of the data that would help solve the individual’s problems. The care also focuses on the mother's physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and social needs to help attain standard of care. The family centered maternity care study also gives the student midwife an opportunity to use her knowledge and skills acquired both practically and theoretically during her period of training to care for a pregnant woman throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium. In this a pregnant woman of G3P2 was used in the study. The use of partograph and nursing process will help in the management of first stage of labour and to diagnose any complication during pregnancy. The nursing process provide framework for solving problems and making decisions in the management of the client and family in a systematic manner. The study also enables student midwife to educate the client and family and also promote cordial relationship between the student midwife, the mother and her family. Furthermore, the study helps the student midwife to put into practice the concept of safe motherhood initiative which has being adapted to render quality maternity care through antenatal, labour and puerperium which will eventually reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. The family centered maternity care study is an academic exercise required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana so as to enable the student midwife to practice after completion of her training

    Child bearing was believed to be normal experiences, consequently more attention was not given to it during pregnancy, labor and puerperium. Which eventually lead to high maternal and neonatal mortality in Ghana. This therefore led to further research to upgrade the standard of midwifery in recent years. In view of this the client was assessed and assisted to solve problems that may arise during the course of the study, using the nursing care plan approach. The nursing care plan is defined as the sum of all activities rendered to attain and maintain high level of wellness for the client. The aim of this care study is to establish good rapport and relationship between the client and family and to help her through antenatal care, solve some of the problems that may arise during pregnancy, labor and puerperium to ensure safe delivery of normal baby. The family centered maternity care study is a requirement by the nursing and midwifery counsel of Ghana serving as a partial fulfilment towards the award of midwifery certificate to the student midwife at the end of her training which will enable her to practice as a midwife. The family centered maternity care study is a required study that every final year student of the midwifery training school is supposed to undertake to satisfy the nurses and the midwives council of Ghana It is a comprehensive care given to a client and family from pregnancy till puerperium. Home visits are also made to ensure continuity of care. The study is necessary because it enables the student midwife put what she has learnt in the classroom into reality and help render holistic care to the client, family and the community at large. The study again helps the student gain knowledge and become conversant with the care given to a woman from pregnancy till end of puerperium. The student uses her knowledge from other areas like pharmacology and nutrition in order to meet the needs of the client and family.

    Client/Family centered maternity care study is a systematic way of administering midwifery care to a pregnant woman and her family throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The Client/ Family Centered Maternity care study also helps the student midwife to use new trends in midwifery like the pictograph, which was tested and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the management of first stage of labour. Also, the active management of third stage of labour was introduced to limit the occurrences of postpartum hemorrhage The Client/Family centered maternity care study helps the student midwife to put into practice the Safe Motherhood initiative that has been adopted in order to help reduce maternal mortality among pregnant women and to improve the quality of health care through antenatal, labour and postnatal periods. The Client/Family centered care study is a required study that every final year student of Registered Midwifery programmed is supposed to undertake to satisfy the Nursing and Midwifery Council to help contribute to the award of professional certificate in Registered Midwifery practice.

    Family centered maternity care study is a modern nursing approach of caring for a prenatal woman throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium considering the fact that the client is a unique individual with special needs that the student midwife takes care of. The care aims to offer a holistic care to an expectant mother focusing on a natural birth process, which needs very efficient nursing intervention. The family centered maternity care enables the student midwife to put into practice all the knowledge and skills obtained during three years training to render a comprehensive midwifery care to a pregnant woman and her family. This will also help to make the client and family to be aware of certain minor disorders in pregnancy and how to manage them at home. Again, this care is undertaken in order to improve upon the student’s writing skills in midwifery and to establish good interpersonal relationship between client and family. Furthermore, the study will also help the student midwife to interact with client, identify her problems and provide appropriate management. This is in partial fulfillment of the award of Diploma Certificate in Midwifery from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.     Client and family centered maternity care is a systematic approach of carrying out holistic and individualized care to both the expectant mother and her family during the period of pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The study is carried out by a student midwife based on a thoughtful understanding of the client as a unique individual with specific problem and needs and to assist her solve them. The client and family are assured of confidentiality. The aim of the family centered maternity care study is to obtain the best possible healthy outcome for the client and her family members. The study also offers the student midwife the maximum opportunity to use the knowledge acquired in the classroom t assess herself. The care study is an academic project which gives the student midwife the chance to choose a client and manage her from period of pregnancy to ten days early puerperium. The student midwife uses the nursing process which involves assessment, diagnose, planning, intervention and evaluation to adequately care for the client. The care study forms part of the academic exercise and also in partial fulfillment of course requirement by the nursing and midwifery council to enable the student midwife obtains a certificate in midwifery.

The study starts during pregnancy, continues through labour and ends after a successful puerperium. The study gives the student midwife the opportunity to ensure proper management of pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The client and family centered maternity care study also forms part of the partial fulfilment for the award of a professional certificate in midwifery by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana by the end of the three-year training as a midwife.

The care is individualized, based on identification and understanding of a client and family as unique people with specific needs and problems. These needs and problems could be psychological, physiological, emotional and spiritual which should be identified and solved. A comprehensive care is rendered based on the problems identified throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium and solved using the nursing care plan. This helps to avoid complications which might arise during pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The study gives the student the opportunity to choose and nurse a client and her family throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium and also prepare the family to receive the newborn using the knowledge acquired in the study of midwifery. It is also a requirement of the Nurses and Midwives council of Ghana, for the award of a professional registered midwifery certificate to students at the end of their three years study in school.

    The client and family centered maternity care study is a systematic approach, used in rendering holistic obstetric care to the expectant mother and family within her own community throughout pregnancy, labour, delivery and puerperium based on a thoughtful understanding of client as a unique individual with specific problems and needs. These needs include the social, emotional, spiritual, psychological and educational aspect of her health. The care provided is individualized and recognizes the importance of family support, participation and choice. This approach also helps the student midwife to identify the effects of pregnancy on the woman and the entire family and to use the knowledge acquired through training to meet the needs and problems of expectant mother and the entire family. The family centered maternity care study is part of the Ghana Nursing and Midwifery Councils requirements for awarding license or certificate to students at the end of their training. The objective of this script is to introduce the reader to the principles of family centered maternity care in obstetrics and how the idea has been utilized to provide care. It helps the student midwife to put in practice the knowledge and skills acquired during training. It again, improves the interpersonal relationship between the student midwife and client as well as her family and community. It also improves the skills and builds her confidence. She uses scientific approach to collect data, analyze and identify problems or needs and evaluate the effectiveness of the care rendered. The family centered maternity care goes a long way to decrease the incidence of infant and maternal mortality and morbidity rate when it is implemented effectively.

She does this by providing total and quality nursing care to the woman and her family. Family centered maternity care study is also the nursing care of an expectant mother and family, based on understanding of the client as a unique individual with specific problems, needs and nursing care as stated by Nurses’ and Midwives’ Council (1997). The study comprises of all the information about the client and her family, which enables the student to recognize the client as a unique individual with specific problems and needs to render good nursing care to promote the health of the client physically, psychologically and socially. The family centered maternity care is to support and enable pregnant women to go through pregnancy without any complications and have an alive baby at term. It also boosts the student midwife’s confidence since she is able to put into practice what she has been taught theoretically. It is also a requirement for the award of a certificate of the Nursing and Midwivery Council of Ghana in the final examination of the student midwife in the award of a professional

This care is rendered right from pregnancy through labour to the end of puerperium. This is based on the understanding of the woman as a unique individual with physical, spiritual, psychological and socio-economic needs. It also helps to prepare the family psychologically in their reception of a new family member. This family centred maternity care study gives a student midwife the necessary opportunity to utilize or put into practice her acquired knowledge in the classroom and to identify clients problem in order to manage her well during pregnancy, labour and then puerperium. Lastly, it helps the student midwife to gain knowledge in the changes that has brought about new management ideas and practices of audit and quality assurance in the various hospitals, clinics and maternity homes. It is done by every final year student of registered midwifery program to satisfy the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana for the award of licensing professional certificate in midwifery.
