    The client/family centered maternity care is systematic approach used in giving holistic obstetrical care to a pregnant woman and her family from the period of antenatal, labour and puerperium. With the new changes in customer needs and patient charter, it helps the student midwife to acquire the right kind of approaches to care for the pregnant woman. Some of these approaches are, explaining procedure to the client to gain the client’s consent, providing privacy and getting the family involved in the care. The maternity care study helps the student midwife to acquire knowledge which can be used to solve any problem associated with pregnancy, labor and puerperium. The competence of the student midwife is also tested in the practical aspect through the maternity care study which the student uses to identify both short- and long-term problems, set objectives for these problems and give intervention that will help her solve them. The main reason for carrying out this care study is to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate and to promote the health of the baby and mother, including the family. It is in this view that the World Health Organization (WHO) develops the partograph in managing the first stage of labor. Using this tool assists the midwife to identify any complication of labor for prompt intervention. The student midwife during this care study gets the chance to use the partograph to enable her to become competent in using it. Finally, the client/family centered maternity care is an obligation for every final year student midwife as a requirement by the nursing and midwifery council of Ghana in partial fulfillment towards the award of registered midwifery certificate.

The client centered maternity care helps the client/family to allay any anxiety during the pregnancy till the time of puerperium. The client and family centered maternity care study also forms part of the partial fulfilment for the award of a professional certificate in midwifery by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana by the end of the three-year training as a midwife. Again, there is confidentiality in whatever the client says which helps build a strong inter personal relationship between the health care and the client where by the client won’t hesitate to express her felling and asking of questions.

The study starts during pregnancy, continues through labour and ends after a successful puerperium. The study gives the student midwife the opportunity to ensure proper management of pregnancy, labour and puerperium.     The patient and family care study is a complete detailed written report of the nursing care to rendered comprehensive service to a patient and his family chosen by the literate student nurse and nursed over a specified period of time. The patient and family care study assist final year student nurses to get the knowledge acquired in their study areas such as public health, Psychiatry, medicine, obstetrics, surgery, gynaecology, sociology and paediatrics nursing to give effective nursing care to a patient. The study also assists the student nurse to render holistic care to patients by nursing each and every patient as an individual. It also helps the student nurse to know much and acquire more Knowledge into the specific condition, their presentations and how they are treated. The patient and family care study forms part of the final assessment of the student nurse at the End of the three (3) years training program before the Registered General Nurses Diploma Certificate is awarded to him/her by the Nurses ‘and Midwifery Council(NMC) of Ghana. The study utilizes the nursing process, which is a systematic approach to nursing care taken to care for an individual and the steps include Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of all data collected on patient and the family to ensure an effective nursing care.The patient and family care study also serve as a means to establish an effective nurse/patient relationship and away of collaborating with other health care team members.

The family Centered maternity care study also gives the student midwife an opportunity to use her knowledge and skills acquired both practically and theoretically during her period of training to care for a pregnant woman throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium. Moreover, the family Centered care study helps the student midwife to use the new trend in midwifery like the partograph and nursing process in management of first stage of labour and to diagnose any complication during pregnancy. The nursing process provide framework for solving problems and making decisions in the management of the client and family in a systematic manner. The study also enables student midwife to educate the client and family and also promote cordial relationship between the student midwife, the mother and her family. Furthermore, the study helps the student midwife to put into practice the concept of safe motherhood initiative which has being adapted to render quality maternity care through antenatal, labour and puerperium which will eventually reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. The family Centered maternity care study is an academic exercise required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana so as to enable the student midwife to practice after completion of her training.

In this context, the expectant mother is considered a unique individual with special problems and needs which must be addressed as far as the health of the mother and the baby is concerned in their own community or locality. The Ultimate aim of Family Centered Maternity Care Study is to help expectant mothers bring to reality their vision of experiencing a successful pregnancy, labour and puerperium with less or no complications from antenatal through labour and puerperium. The Family Centered Maternity Care Study is geared toward the total well-being of the expectant mothers and their babies, including their physical, spiritual, social and mental state. This equips the student midwife with skills and knowledge to become competent and efficient in delivering health service to mothers and their babies and facilitating teaching and family bonding. The Family Centered Maternity Care enables the student midwife to practice what she has been taught in class. This gives her the necessary skills to practice as a qualified midwife in future to help reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. The Family Centered Maternity Care Study is also a requirement by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana in partial fulfillment for the award of a Licensing Certificate for the student after the completion of the training

The active management of third stage of labour was also introduced to limit the occurrences of postpartum haemorrhage. The maternity care study helps the student midwife to acquire knowledge which can be used to solve any problem associated with pregnancy, labor and puerperium. The competence of the student midwife is also tested in the practical aspect through the maternity care study which the student uses to identify both short- and long-term problems, set objectives for these problems and give intervention that will help her solve them.     A family centered maternity care is the sum total and systematic care given to a pregnant woman and her family during pregnancy, labour and puerperium, taking into consideration their individual problems. The family centered care study is an academic work that gives the student midwife the greatest opportunity to practise all the knowledge and skills acquired during the period of training in providing comprehensive and quality nursing care to client and family. This care is extended to the community in which the client lives. The care study also serves as a learning tool for the student to collect relevant data, analyse the data, plan and implement nursing interventions and evaluate the care to ascertain whether set goals have been achieved or not. The study offers new ways of providing care for women and their families that integrate during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum by helping the families make informed choices for their care. The study will also help the student midwife to give the necessary supervision, care, and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and postpartum including preventable measures and detection of abnormal conditions on both mother and the newborn that was learnt in class. Some of the current trends in midwifery is the introduction of partograph which helps in monitoring labour and to see when labour is prolonged so that possible interventions can be done. Another current trend is technological advancement, for example foetal monitoring has progressed from the use of fetoscope to electronic foetal monitors. In addition, we also have family centered care as a current trend in midwifery, thus integration and bonding take high priority and much anticipatory counselling is offered. ii The study consists of all information of the client and the family which enables the student to recognize the client as an individual who has a specific problem and needs to render good nursing care. The family centered maternity care study is an academic work which gives the student midwife the opportunity to nurse a client throughout pregnancy, labor and puerperium using the knowledge and skills acquired during the three-year training program. The study helps the midwife to use new trends in midwifery like the opportunity to use partograph in monitoring client during labour. This partograph is a tool developed by World Health Organization (WHO), which when used correctly helps curb the menace of maternal death in the country. The concept of Family centered maternity care study is a systematic approach of rendering holistic midwifery care to gravide woman and her family throughout pregnancy, labour and puerperium base on a thoughtful understanding of the client as a unique individual with special problems and needs. The family centered maternity care is mainly based on total nursing care in which the physical, psychological, spiritual, social, and rehabilitative aspect of the client is considered. It includes the expectant mother, her family and the community in preparing towards the impending arrival of a new family member. The client and family centered maternity care study also helps students midwives to make good use of the new trends in midwifery like the use of partograph to monitor client in the first stage of labour and the continuity of care to the client after delivery. With this it also enables the student to practice the aspect of midwifery that deals with the client needs, the right of the clients in rendering quality and proper care to her satisfaction. It also helps the student to gain knowledge in the changes and management, ideals and practices in the clinics and maternity homes. The confidentiality of the client is ensured and the client feels at ease providing vivid history and discussions on confidential matters. The care study offers the student midwife the opportunity to put all the knowledge and skills acquired during training into practice. It also enables student to detect health problems and solve their health problems. Also, the family centered maternity care study helps to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
